Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

He was only 9 years old when he was murdered. He was in his family car when he was hit by bullets fired by “plainclothes” government officers.[1] Kian Pirfalak has been venerated as yet another martyr of this revolution. An act of indiscriminate state violence and fatal repression squandered his youth, his innocence, and his potential. Kian stands out as a symbol of squandered potential life. He said he wanted to be an inventor in a clip of him testing a science project, we can see his delight in his schoolwork. Every time I hear his voice I feel my heart break apart.
The retaliation of the state against Kian’s family was rapid; after the funeral of her son, Zeynab Molaei-Rad was brought on television to redact her statements about the government's involvement with the murder of her son. In addition to this public intimidation, 2 months after Kian Pirfalak’s murder, Molaei-Rad was also inexplicably barred from continuing her position as a teacher, she was denied a termination letter when she confronted the state’s education security officials as reported by The channel of the Coordinating Council of Trade Union Organizations of Iranian Cultivators in a telegram channel.[5][6] This speaks to the state's crushing indifference to its people's condition, utilizing forceful manipulation to maintain its image in the face of atrocities.
