Woman Life Freedom Uprising

Welcome | UT Austin's Woman Life Freedom Digisource

Iran's Woman, Life, Freedom Uprising erupted in September 2022, following the death in morality police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Jina Amini, a Kurd from the town of Saqqez. Iranians were enraged that anyone, including a young girl from the margins of Iranian society, should lose their life because of their attire. Nationwide protests ensued, and what happened was a revolution in all but name. The Islamic Republic did not lose its grip on power, but Iranians made clear that they will not tolerate endless gender repression. At the core, this was an intersectional uprising that understood liberation for all to be only possible through the liberation of women, in Iran and elsewhere. What made this uprising also remarkable was that it was enacted by a majority young Iranians - many of them school kids and teenagers - and that it took place both in the actual and the virtual realm. It is fair to say that it would be nearly impossible to present an account of this momentous uprising through conventional ink on paper historiography. Students in Dr. Nahid Siamdoust's undergraduate course "The Politics & Art of Iran's Woman, Life, Freedom Uprising" compiled this digital resource together during the Fall 2024 semester. We hope that it serves as an insightful resource on what many have called the world's first truly feminist revolution.
