Finding Community Through Protest - The Role of Arts in the Woman, Life, Freedom Movement

Art has been utilized to the maximum, when it comes to the Woman, Life, Freedom. Iranian artists both inside Iran and in diaspora, alongside international artists who have stood in solidarity, have managed to use art as the quickest way to convey the message of freedom in the Woman, Life, Freedom Movement. It can be inspired by the human triumphs and losses.
In the Woman, Life, Freedom, art has been liberally applied to mourn the loss of those lost during the struggle, to reminisce what could have been had if the opposing state did not resort to violence, but also to imagine what could be if and when the movement succeeds. It is without a doubt one of the most moving modes of communication used by those protesting for the Woman, Life, Freedom.

An inspiring use of it has been applied bu Turaj Saverivand who “has used elements from some of the masterpieces of Persian book painting to meld a sense of Iran’s history with current events1” The visual presentation here utilizes the well revered and familiar artistic depiction of both monsters and the heroes of Persian literature classics. This visualization simply put, gives an insight of how the reaction to the movement has been observed, but also that the non-discriminating use of violence will be perceived as a similar battle for justice against the cruel monsters later down the history.

Similarly, the bold revolutionary posters created by Iranian digital artists such as Meysam Azarzad, emboldened by Shahnameh lines adjusted to reflect the story of Iranian victims creates an inspiring modem of communication. These posters follow the artistic choices of prior revolution of 1979 in Iran and without a doubt will go down in history as a marker of a similar hunger and drive to fight against injustice.
