Like Anne Boyd, there is an award in Professor Loher's name as well, singling out students contributing to literature and library services for youth. It was also around this period, 1948, where the doctoral program in library science was established.

Founding members of the Beta Phi Mu Alpha Chapter, 1948

This photograph shows the first ever meeting of the Alpha Chapter of Beta Phi Mu. Founded in 1948, this is an honors society specifically recognizing individuals in the library field. Since 1998, this chapter has been associated with the American Library Association. On their official website, they state their motto is "Aliis inserviendo consumor", which translates to "Consumed in the service of others."

Not only is audio-visual equipment used for teaching, but there are also classes at GSLIS on audio-visual preservation and archiving. These kinds of materials are especially applicable to the school's attention paid to digital preservation and data curation.

This photograph shows Professor Herbert Goldhor and Mrs. Barbara Donagan preparing publications of library journals. Professor Goldhor was the director of GSLIS at this time and the editor of the school's publication program. Mrs. Donagan was his assistant. In 1952 , the journal "Library Trends" was launched. It is rated in the top 10 of LIS journals.

This photograph shows a doctoral candidate teaching a reference class. The doctoral program at GSLIS is the oldest degree in the LIS field, having been established in 1948. According to a GSLIS history timeline available on their website, the first doctoral degree was awarded in 1951 to Rolland Elwell Stevens.

Michael Gorman is considered to be a very influential figure in LIS. He was the Director of Technical Services at the University of Illinois Library, and would later go on to be President of the American Library Association in 2005/2006.
