What Can You See From There?: Bande Déssinée and the West in TekkonKinkreet

Matsumoto Taiyo and influences

Japan’s comics “developed for years in relative isolation from their Western cousins” (McCloud 131) with exception of Matsumoto Taiyo.  The drawing style of Matsumoto diverges from other seinen artists due to his European influences.  Matsumoto spent ample time in various European countries in his early twenties.

Franco-Belgian comic artists like Enki Bilal and Moebius took hold of him:  “they had a huge influence on me.  I can’t read French, so I was only looking at the pictures, but it was a style of drawing I hadn’t seen before” (Hadfield).
