The drawing style of Matsumoto diverges from other seinen artists due to his European influences. Matsumoto spent ample time in various European countries in his early twenties.
Franco-Belgian comic artists like Enki Bilal and Moebius took hold of him: “they had a huge influence on me. I can’t read French, so I was only looking at the pictures, but it was a style of drawing I hadn’t seen before” (Hadfield).
