Unit 4, Lesson 1: How did Bryn Mawr and Loma Linda come to be?

Growing California

While cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco were growing quickly, some areas in California were growing slowly, but surely. The San Bernardino Valley had been settled by Cahuilla Native Americans, Spanish missionaries, Spanish cattle ranchers, and Mormon settlers. In the late 1880s land prospectors, businessmen interested in owning and developing land started to come to the San Bernardino Valley. When land prospectors arrived in the San Bernardino Valley they bought large sections of land that they hoped to transform into towns.

1. Pretend you are going to start your own town. What does a town need?
