Understory 2017: An Annual Anthology of Achievement

Zombie Half Marathon

ALEXANDRA ANNE ELLIS

I am caked in you
Along a coastal trail
Breathing in the restfulness
of millions of years of rocks underneath dust
Long winded breaths flicker like a faucet loose
Dripping last drops
Holding in last nuances
I kiss you and you see me
Tree trunked dipped backs
Pressing into thicket shoulder bumps
Knee caps on busted roots
Splitting my knees, you can taste it
The hate I have for light
The pleasure I get from pleasure
And the ease I get from death
Under me as you are above
Shoving and thirsting
One mile left
turning right, I nurse my truth
At the surface cracks an unfamiliar moral
Lies like loose knots
untie my life from yours
A hill
My feet stumble on tree branches
Face bent upon face, brown eyes lusting
We want what we want when we want it
Killing me slowly
One last step
Letting go of the romantic nostalgia that is you
Finally finished.
