When Aphrodite Walks
NICK CAUDEL
An ember flees your reach, But still you just repeat
The same constraining game
That will never match your speech.
When flames ignore your grasps
Do you ever think to ask
Why you have yet to gain
What you never will attract?
Your smile delights some hearts
Playing effervescent parts—
But they're simply shoddy masks
Here to strike the briefest sparks.
Amongst these hearts you play
As your passions are delayed;
They'll learn you'll never care,
But they'll always taste your name.
Tattooed within their heads:
A legend not to end.
And though you take your leave,
It's but a settled trend.
When Aphrodite walks,
Their lips and eyes are locked:
A train of grins she teased
Whom now she only mocks.
The same constraining game
That will never match your speech.
When flames ignore your grasps
Do you ever think to ask
Why you have yet to gain
What you never will attract?
Your smile delights some hearts
Playing effervescent parts—
But they're simply shoddy masks
Here to strike the briefest sparks.
Amongst these hearts you play
As your passions are delayed;

But they'll always taste your name.
