After investigating more thoroughly the brand Chiquita on several different online sources, I was able to gain a greater understanding of the company as a whole. For the Advertising Age map it has a lot of words like marketing, creativity, commercial, media, Chiquita, digital, ad, banana, etc. None of these words surprised me being from this source, because these are all things that Advertising Age supports and writes about.

From the Food Technologies website, there were words like technology, food, sciences, resources, chiquita, global, advertising, banana etc. This map focuses more on sciences and food technology which is understandable just from looking at the name of the website.

For the Academic Search Premier, it was hard to find sources that I could open online and put on the map. But from the sources that I did find, some of the words were Chiquita, transnational, Columbian, corporate and banana. Alot of the articles were about Colombia where the bananas were produced. If I was able to find more of a variety of articles this map would have been different.

Lastly, the annual records report talked about company, assets, income, chiquita, financial etc. This makes sense given that this is a report mainly talking about finances.

When looking at all of the maps combined, there were both similarities and differences. All of them mentioned the brand name Chiquita, however, because of the different topics and focuses of the websites thats where the variety comes in.

Part B:

In the PDF we were assigned, “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” by Micheal Pollan, it talks about a lot about corn and they way that it impacts our society. One thing he refers to a lot is how corn production has changed over time and how that has made a difference in the food industry. The first point that he brought up was the fact that you can grow so much more corn on the same amount of land then you could in the 1920’s. This is due to the new type of corn called hybrid. Hybrid corn that Naylor plants and talks about in the reading can withstand more harsher conditions than the corn was able to in the early 1920’s. With the new hybrid corn, not only can they plant more of it in the same amount of space, but they also lost less of the corn when conditions got bad. Another thing that the article talked about was the use of GMOS or Genetically Modified Organisms. These are plants that can withstand pesticides and are supposed to produce corn more efficiently. This is controversial, according to Naylor, because it “messes with evolution” and the cost for technology is not worth it.

Not only has the way corn is being produced has changed, the amount of it has as well. On a farm in the 1920’s, there were many types of plants/livestock being produced. Nowadays, the amount of corn has grown tremendously. When it used to be the fourth product produced, it is now the top and sometimes only crop that farmers choose to produce. This just shows how important corn has become in our soceity. But since technology has made it so easy to produce corn, it is no longer as profitable as it once was, so families cannot make a living on it.

Part C:

Advertising Age Chapters: Becoming Chiquita, A Fresh Look on Bananas, Marketing Our Company, A Twist on Commercials.

Food Technologies: The Science Behind the Food, Exploring New Technologies, Food and Policy of Chiquita, The Global Impact.

Academic Search Premier: The Chiquita Company, A Transnational Company, Chiquita in Columbia.

Annual Report: The Value of Our Company, Sales and Assets of Chiquita, The Finances Behind Chiquita.

Although all the chapters are about the same company, it is interesting to see how different the various search engine’s content can be. Depending on what kind of articles the websites provide, dictate what kinds of words come up in the map. Like in Part A, Advertising Age is a lot about marketing and advertising strategies, commercials and how the company is viewed. It is very different from the types of things found on Food Technologies and Academic Search Premier which focus more on the core of the company and go more into depth to discuss what goes on inside the company.
