2012 Annual Financial Report - Dole Food
Company, Inc.
http://www.annualreports.com/Company/6262

Although my discourse maps circled around the obvious word, Dole, they had key differences because of where the sources came from and who the target audiences were. For example Dole’s annual report was focused on the company’s business reports and the their earnings and transactions. The most prevalent terms within its discourse map were focused on income, transactions, operations, etc. These reports were aimed to inform the government and Dole’s accountants. Unlike the annual report, IFT is a website that focuses on food science and the technologies within the industry. That is why this discourse map had words focused towards scientists within Dole’s food technology. For example they included terms related to food production like produce blend, fresh, health strategies, schools, and manufacturing. When compared to Adage, a website / magazine aimed purely towards consumers, an advertising agency, I saw words like health, sales, and even information about the product. One of the most prevalent terms with adage was the word “Said”. This meant that their information came from people (possibly professionals).
Unlike the previous sources, Ebsco is an academic recourse used by intellectuals, like students and professors, looking for information about what the company is doing. Ebsco had words specified towards current events and studies. That is why terms like sugar and dates were the predominant terms within this discourse. This source provides us with information about the current events happening within the company itself, which are always not always positive. The dates in from my sources indicated declines and recalls that the company may have not wanted to disclose to the public; Things that if everyone knew, could impact the sales of Dole.

Part B.

Micheal Pollan’s the Omnivore’s Dilemma presents a variety of ways the role of corn has influenced our contemporary food system. Although he says corn helped increase food production there are many drawbacks that he discovered not only to the human population, but also the livestock, which eventually ends up on our dinner plate. To start one of the ways livestock is being fed is through an unnatural diet. Ruminants, such as cows, have a rumen stomach, which allows them to eat grass as a source of protein. To highly speed up their fattening rate, and their time to the slaughter house corn is being fed to them. This, as he states, can lead to many problems (even death) since corn is not something they can process naturally. In turn, our diets have become susceptible due to the antibiotics they need to inject the animal with so they can tolerate this new diet.  Another thing he discovered was the poverty that farmers are stricken with because they must produce a surplice of corn (being sold at low cost) to make ends meet. As he followed the corn down the line he realized that this surplus of corn is being made into HFCS (high fructose corn syrup). This is causing the surgeon general to warn us about an obesity epidemic in the United States.  Americans are consuming more and more processed foods / and drinks which are derived from corn. Because it wasn’t discovered since the 1980’s it’s a new rising problem. 3/5 of Americans are being struck with diabetes and obesity simply because our foods contain such levels of this processed corn which in many of our products is HFCS. Also, these products are extremely cheap yet yield high calories, again, contributing to the obesity crisis. Soda and snacks for example are very cheap to buy yet they contain lengthier lists of processed ingredients, which cause those with less money to purchase them just to survive. In his report, he found the overproduction of corn, and the monopoly of companies acquiring it at low prices, has guaranteed the cheapest calories in the supermarket to be the unhealthiest yet the most affordable; at the cost of the consumer, the animal, and most unfortunately the farmer.

Part C.

I presumed the titles I was formulating could correspond to a single article within a newspaper advertisement or a heading in a portfolio so I tried to make them practical and catchy. Because Ebsco is a academic database, somewhat of a scholarly Google, I simply made the title “What they don’t want you to know…”We use search engines to figure things we want to know because some information isn’t publicized. From what I personally know about adage they’re an advertising and marketing industry. The title had to be a type of catch phrase if it were to attract the readers attention. Thus, I chose to make it “Dole Fruit to the Rescue!” Not only did the exclamation point stick out and give the title a sense of importance, but the phrase “rescue” gives the reader a sense of curiosity and urgency. Thirdly I titled the IFT discourse “The Science Behind Your Banana” because they are an organization aimed at informing people about food science and technology. I would imagine they have an article or scientific publishing titled something along the lines of “what are we really eating”, so it seemed appropriate to apply that strategy to one of Dole’s products, a banana. Finally, I titled the Annual Report as the “2012 Annual Financial Report – Dole Food Company, Inc.” because it’s an official document. Official documents like a Financial Report need a subject, date (year), and the company for which it represents.
