This is the discourse map generated using annual reports from the years 2011-2013 found on Tyson Food, Inc.'s website.
The greatest differences are between the discourse maps based on the articles and the one based on the annual reports. The articles seem to concentrate more on how Tyson Foods, Inc. is developing as a company in order to fit consumers needs and market demands, while the annual reports shows more of an emphasis on how the company is developing in terms of financial aspects. The first discourse map based on articles from Advertising Age seems to focus on the Tyson Foods, Inc. products themselves and potential problems they face, such as food-borne illnesses, and the quality of the products. The second and third focus on the image Tyson Foods, Inc. is creating for itself in terms of how the public perceives the brand and the ways the brand is trying to get involved in the community. These discourse maps prompt me to generate these questions: Hows does changing consumer needs effect job security? How has the brand kept up with the increasing demands for healthier products? How does community involvement change the way the brand is viewed?
Part B:
One way that Michael Pollan traces the role of corn in contemporary food systems is through speaking of how corn is what is fed to animals that compromise the meat industries, such as cows, chickens, turkeys, pigs, etc. Also, through feeding animals corn, he was even able to draw a connection to dairy products like milk, eggs and cheese. Beyond what is fed to the animals, corn also makes up a lot of ingredients in processed foods, drinks, snacks and condiments, which you normally wouldn't associate much with corn. In addition, the properties of corn also made it simple for breeding them in a way to make them have more desirable traits, such as growing plentifully and becoming accustomed to modern farming techniques, which in turn was beneficial to contemporary food systems in the long run.
Part C:
Chapter Names Based on Discourse Maps:
- The Threat of Food-Borne Illness
- Developing Healthier and Consumer Friendly Products
- Food as a way to Build-Up Communities
- Products that Sell
I chose these titles because I felt that they summarized the different concepts that were presented in the discourse maps. I also felt that the titles showed how Tyson Foods, Inc. has chosen to evolve over the years as consumer needs and wants evolve. In addition to how the brand has changed, I wanted to include difficulties the brand faces in terms of the safety of the product and how this can effect productivity and amount of money that is being made. I also wanted to include how the brand is involved in the community as I feel that this is a way to stay competitive and develop a certain image. As money is important in big industry and often dictates the direction a brand chooses to go in, I felt they way the company makes money and how much money it makes is an important topic to include.
