Horace Silver, Blowin' The Blues Away

Horace Silver, Blowin’ The Blues Away, Blue Note (US), Label #4017, 12” LP, 1959.

The Blue Note label has cult status amongst jazz enthusiasts because of its high-quality recordings and dedication to jazz. It was founded in 1959 by Alfred Lion as a medium to express his love for boogie-woogie pianists Albert Ammons and Meade “Lux” Lewis. The label documented the growth of small swing groups and eventually made classic recordings of Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and others. Their meticulous recording sessions included sufficient rehearsal time to allow for challenging material to be played with the greatest skill and creativity. Their album designs, done by Reid Miles, have also become iconic.
