Mapping YouTube
The Players
Content CreatorsSometimes called "influencers" or "YouTubers," content creators are the crux of the YouTube economy, uploading their own content to the site through their individual channels. The value of individual content creators to advertising sponsors and multi-channel networks (MCNs) is measured both quantitatively and qualitatively: the number of subscribers their channel has, the number of views individual videos might have, and the "influence" or impact their channel has on convincing viewers to click on advertisers' products.
Multi-channel Networks (MCNs)
MCNs are groupings of affiliated channels, partnered together through a single management entity. By partnering with an MCN, content creators often gain access to a network of viewers, other creators, support staff, and potential advertising sponsors, as well access to as a host of tools and analytics to better help creators manage their channels. Though there are hundreds of MCNs currently involved in the YouTube industry, the four biggest MCNs are currently Machinima, Fullscreen, Maker Studios, and Big Frame.
