Audiences & Markets

Starting with $100 million investment in original content and channels two years ago, YouTube has been working hard to identify what its viewers watch and how best to make money off of them. As you will read in the "End of Original Content," YouTube has learned since it launched its Original Channels Initiative in 2012 that its viewers prefer homegrown, do-it-yourselfer stars to already big-name celebrities, and that certain genres in particular (comedy, for example) are more popular. As a result, YouTube has begun to change the ways in which it invests in its content, preferring to aid creators through the new YouTube Spaces rather than funding them directly. Meanwhile, YouTube has also been busy redefining its revenue structure, which has the potential to make monetized content event less profitable for the creator (read "YouTube Changing Revenue Structures").
