A Look into the Past: Research on Craft Artists from the 1970s in Pittsburgh

Wendell Castle

Biography
Wendell Castle was born in Kansas on November 6, 1932. Castle was a sculptor who is credited with being the father of the art furniture movement. Wood is the primary material Castle sculpted his whimsical furniture out of and his signature look was created by gluing layers of wood together into a block and then carving it like a piece of stone. Some of Castle’s notable works include “Walking Cabinet” and “Walnut Sculpture”, but he also created everyday pieces of furniture that could be bought for the home.

Artwork shown at The Store
Castle's works were shown at The Store in May 1975 for the “The Art in Homemaking” exhibition.

Current Career
Castle has works in permanent collections across the country such as The Smithsonian and The White House. He opened the Wendell Castle School in New York in 1980 and received a gold medal from the American Craft Council in 1997. While Wendell Castle died on January 20, 2018, his whimsical furniture continues to inspire and remains an important figure of the arts and crafts movement of the 1970s.
