A Look into the Past: Research on Craft Artists from the 1970s in Pittsburgh

Author Bio - Emily Campbell

I am a senior at the University of Pittsburgh majoring in Art History and minoring in Museum Studies.

Over the course of this internship I have researched artists who exhibited their works at The Store spanning from 1972 to 1979. Navigating through the first two scrapbooks of The Store I came across hundreds of artists, many unfamiliar to me. However, there were some names that stood out such as Alexander Calder, E.E. Cummings, and Paul Klee.

Learning about the various artists who came through The Store has been both fascinating and inspiring. I have also learned about the founder, Betty Raphael, and the trailblazing work she did for the artisans and craftspeople working in the 1970s and 1980s.
