Mary Azarian

Biography
Mary Azarian was born on the outskirts of Washington, D.C in 1940. Azarian is a woodcut artist and children’s book illustrator. Her woodcuts typically depict scenes of farm life and are inspired by her growing up on her grandfather’s farm. Originally she began producing her prints in black and white by hand before eventually adding color.

In September of 1975 Azarian’s woodcuts appeared in the “Crafts for All Seasons” exhibition at The Store.

Current Career
Currently Azarian's prints are produced using an old Vandercook proof press. Azarian prides herself on making her work affordable and running a one-woman operation. Each of her prints is printed, hand painted, packaged, and shipped by herself. She has illustrated over 50 books and in 1999 she won the Caldecott medal for her illustrations in the picture book “Snowflake Bentley.” Today, Azarian lives in Vermont with her husband where she continues to make prints.
