  1. It was argued that while we were two
  2. weeks distant from the disputed territory
  3. the “border ruffians” were “just over the line”
  4. & could go into Kansas any day to control
  5. elections or to drive our people from the
  6. territory, while we should be compelled
  7. to travel over 300 miles in the enemies coun-
  8. try before ever seeing Kansas.  
  9. Again there were many who believed that
  10. Congress & the administration would put every
  11. possible obstacle in the way of the Em. Aid Co.
  12. and compel its absolute failure.
  13. Still further that this proslavery congress
  14. & administration were controlled by the
  15. slave power of the “Solid South” which
  16. had gone on increasing in strength until
  17. in the repeal of the Missouri Compromise
  18. it had shown itself stronger than even be
  19. fore. In all these arguments there was
  20. great force & even greater in others yet
  21. to be named. I mean the indifference
  22. of antislavery politicians & the apathy
  23. (or perhaps better) The hostility of the numerous
  24. antislavery societies of the north who believed
  25. in Garrison & succession.
  26. That slavery was stronger than ever before
  27. on the day of the passage of the Kansas Nebras-
  28. ka bill may be gathered from the speeches
  29. of Wade, Seward & Wilson in the senate &
  30. from the editorials of the leading anti-
  31. slavery newspaper in the country.
