The Speech that Settled Kansas: Eli Thayer's Rousing Lecture

Lecture or Speech?

Though Thayer referred to his talk as a speech, I use here lecture, speech, and talk interchangeable throughout the project. The OED defines lecture as “a discourse given before an audience upon a given subject, usually for the purpose of instruction.”[1] The difference between a speech and a lecture is that a speech may not always have instruction while a lecture usually is instructive. The nature of Thayer’s speech links it to a lecture in light of content and intention.
