The Space Between: Literature and Culture 1914–1945

The Space Between:  Literature and Culture 1914-1945 is the annual peer-reviewed journal for The Space Between Society.  Like the society, the journal is devoted to interdisciplinary scholarship on the period bracketed by the two World Wars.  We are interested in approaches to texts of all kinds, emphasizing research on lesser-known writers and artists and understudied topics of the period, including literary and cultural responses to the First and Second World Wars.

New! CFP for Special Issue. Searching for the Truly Strong Man: Masculinities 1914-1945 (Volume 20, 2024)

The Space Between Journal seeks submissions for a 2024 special issue “Searching for the Truly Strong Man: Masculinities 1914-1945”, a companion issue to 2022’s special issue “Searching for the Modern Girl: Flappers and Bright Young Things Around the World.”  What models of masculinity were being circulated in the early twentieth century, and what their complexities and contradictions? From Buchan’s heroes to Auden’s Truly Strong Man, from the various versions of Mackie Messer to Borges’s worlds of criminals, from airmen to cowboys to superheroes to proletarians: the types of masculinity the period portrays, praises and pillories are multitudinous, and this special issue looks to explore as wide a range as possible. Essay submissions are due to the special issue edtior by December 31, 2023. For more information, see the CFP.
