My mother, Rose My mother, Rose, when she was ten? Eleven? Halfway through a childhood spent in foster homes, before she found out her mom was alive and living in an institution; before leaving school after the 8th grade so she could work; and before settling in with the aunt and uncle who would treat her as their own. I wish I could say that the rest of her life was easier, but she did come through it all with her faith and sense of humor intact. We miss her every day.

Kay and Henderson Cole Kay and Henderson Cole, on Topsail Island, NC. Kay was my best friend Lisa's mom; they took me in when I was a troubled teen, so she was always "Mom." She married Henderson & eventually they retired to his home state of North Carolina. Mom was an educator at a nature center for several years, and the barrier island with its protected sea turtle nesting areas and swarms of fiddler crabs must have seemed like Heaven. Mom passed in October, 2014, and Henderson followed two years later.

Alfonso Borrego Sr.
My mother and father, Rose and Joe Carneiro My mother and father, Rose and Joe Carneiro (with my mom's Aunt Marcel and Uncle Jack), at their big Italian wedding, September 18, 1955. They had seven kids in twelve years; things weren't easy, but they loved each other very much. Dad left us much too soon, on November 15, 1970. Our beautiful mother left us on December 15, 2006--still too soon, quite honestly. It's nice to think they're together somewhere, maybe having a laugh with Marcel and Jack.
Rosario Lopez My Nino Chayo served as a gunner in the First Army 109th Anti-Aircraft Artillery (mobil) Battalion in WWII, landed on "Omaha, Easy Red" beach D-Day 5. They went on to support and defend many important locations such as liberation of Luxembourg City, Battle of the Bulge, capture of Remagen Bridge, and on 4/20/1945, the 109th ended anti-aircraft operations a 5:00pm near Kassel, Germany. After leaving the military he and some of the men he served with dressed up as clowns and spent their days entertaining children in the hospital.
