Historic Timeline

1850s: First American settlers appear along Fountain Creek.
1853: The Buttes Cemetery (now Wilson Cemetery) established on adjacent property.
1860: The development of irrigation ditches along Fountain Creek for farming and ranching begins.
1862: President Lincoln signs the Homestead Act into law.
1863: William Cotten first to settle on property.
1870: Andrew G. Lincoln and James C. Woodbury begin buying parcels of land that will become Old Hanna Ranch.
1872: The Denver and Rio Grande Railroad obtains right of way through property, builds the Little Buttes station on Andrew Lincoln's property.
1879: Frank Roby comes to Colorado Springs. 
1893: February 7th, Walter Hanna is born in New Mexico.
1902: May 29th, severe flooding on Fountain Creek destroys Little Butte Station's section house.
1903: James C. Woodbury Dies. 
1903: August 6th, D&RG wreck at Little Buttes; no loss of life.
1904: Frank Roby Buys the 2,000-acre Hall Ranch, combining it with his existing 5,000-acre Lincoln Ranch to create the Roby Ranch (large portion of the future Hanna Ranch). 
1911: Frank Roby of the Roby Ranch dies at his home the Buttes area
1913: The Roby Ranch is sold to C.A. Hubbard and Co. for $125,000. 
1918: Walter Sr. and Daphne Hanna (Holt) are married in Socorro, NM.
1920: August 25, Mary Hayward (Hanna) (Frost) is born. 
1935: Major Fountain Creek Flood.
1939: Roby Ranch is sold to Robert A. Allen.
1940: Roby Ranch is sold to Ackerman and Deatherage. 
1940s: Italian POWs build the future home of the Hanna family (Old HR).
1946: L.A. McCandlish purchases the Roby Ranch for a reported $260,000.
1946: December 31st, the McCandlish ranch land is purchased by Walter Hanna and his son, Clark.
1955: September 24, Kirk Hanna is born.
1957: Clark Hanna and daughter die in car/train collision.
1957-1958: Parcels of land acquired by the state for I-25 construction.
1959: Walter Hanna sells the Bar-H-Bar cattle ranch in Socorro County, NM.
1961: Interstate 25 construction is completed. 
1961: “Old Hanna Ranch” property sold to Clear Springs.
1965: Major Fountain Creek flood.
1966:Little Wrangler children's book published. 
1969: Walter Hanna dies. 
1973: Kirk Hanna graduates from Fountain Valley High School.
1994: Kirk Hanna receives Colorado’s Riparian Steward of the Year Award.
1995: Major Fountain Creek flood.
1996: Kirk Hanna receives Governor Romer's Smart Growth Individual Award
1997: Kirk Hanna named President of the Colorado Cattleman's Association.
1998: December 19th, Kirk Hanna Dies of an apparent suicide.
1999: Mary Hayward (Hanna) (Frost) dies 10/23.
2008: The ranch property is split between Steve Hanna and Ann Hanna.
2014: The Hanna Ranch film debuts.
