OLD Art in an Early Global World at WAM: A WAM/College of the Holy Cross Collaboration

The Adoration of the Kings: Where was this object produced?

Ryan Carter, Class of 2025, College of the Holy Cross

This painting was produced in Foligno, Italy, a town in east Umbria which is a central region of Italy. The painting was commissioned to adorn one of the lower walls of the Trinici family palace also known as the Palazzo Trinici. Despite having a diverse history the Palazzo is responsible for some of the great examples of late medieval art.

Foligno itself was originally an Umbrian settlement but the architecture of the city reflects the influence of the Roman empire. The city gained its importance because of its strategic location which allowed city officials to command the main pass between the Umbrian plain and the Adriatic coast. The town reached its peak under the rule of the powerful Trinici family yet it eventually fell to the Papal States ending Trinici rule.
