This painting was produced somewhere in central Italy, in Umbria. Another painting made by the same artist depicting the same subject, The Adoration of the Kings, was produced in Foligno, a town in east Umbria. That fresco was commissioned to adorn one of the lower walls of the Trinici family palace, also known as the Palazzo Trinici.
Foligno gained its importance because of its strategic location, which allowed the city to command the main pass between the Umbrian plain and the Adriatic coast. The town reached its peak under the rule of the powerful Trinici family, the patrons of this painting. However, Foligno eventually fell to the Papal States, ending Trinici rule.
