The Book As

Unreadable Text: Doctor Mister Miracles's Guide to Miracle-Making: A Manual (Abridged)

Doctor Mister Miracles's Guide to Miracle-Making: A Manual (Abridged), Josh Hockensmith's 2013 study in complex layers of translation, perfectly embodies the ideas of readable and unreadable text. The collaged book, layered on a Chinese acupuncture manual, self-professes that it was "translated from Chinese into Enochian by Dr. Mr. Miracles, translated from Enochian into English by Josh Hockensmith." Traditional Chinese, a language and script unknown to Hockensmith, translated into Enochian, the fake language of the angels, finally translated into the familiar script of English, passes through layers of fictional translation to create the artist book. Hockensmith draws an abstracted meaning from an unreadable text and generates a new interpretation and use of the source work.
