The American Dream Denied

The term “toxic” relates to poisonous or deadly effects on the body by inhalation (breathing), ingestion (swallowing), or by direct contact with a chemical (touching). For any chemical, there is a dose threshold – a dose or exposure level below which the harmful or adverse effects of a substance are not seen in a population. However, for substances causing cancer (carcinogens), no safe level of exposure exists, since any exposure could result in cancer. Improper storage and containment of landfill items resulted in leaching of more than 140 toxic materials into the soil of Gordon Plaza, at least 49 of which are associated with cancer.
