Taking on the Challenge

Tips for resolving challenges

Come to PALS and other Student Learning workshops

Student Learning has workshops on critical thinking, essay writing (quoting, paraphrasing, and referencing), and other academic skills. Visit the website to learn more about these workshops.

Join study groups

Study groups enable you to discuss your assignments and old exam papers with other students. Ask at Student Learning about PASS—study groups with student leaders who have already done the course and got excellent grades.

Go to your lecturer/tutor during office hours with your questions

Try to present yourself positively as a student who thinks. Identify what you want help with. Instead of saying, “What do I do for this assignment?”, say, “I thought of doing ... I found materials on ... and ... Do you think I am on the right track?”.

Do Writ 151

WRIT151 is a writing course offered by the School of Linguistics and Applied Language Studies. It will help you understand academic expectations such as critical thinking and referencing.
