Taking on the Challenge

Participating in tutorials

Tutorials are small classes of 10–20 students led by a senior student or lecturer. They supplement the lectures. In tutorials, you can ask questions and practise applying the material you have learnt in lectures.

Most tutorials are compulsory, which means you MUST attend the required number (for example, eight out of ten tutorials) to pass the course. In some courses, your tutorial participation is actually worth a percentage of your grade for the course (for example 15%). Your tutors will expect that you have attended the lectures for that week, have completed the required readings for the week, and have thought about the material. They will expect you to discuss the material and contribute to the class. Your participation will be assessed by your tutor throughout the trimester, which is why it is so important to go to all the tutorials and participate.

Tutorials are a key part of study at Victoria, and it is important that you make the most of this small group situation. Here is what you can do.
