Stereotypes in the 21st Century: Introduction

In the 21st we have made many huge advancements in technology, medicine and government. The creation of the internet has connected humans all over the globe and medicine has come a long way to increase human life expectancy. However, histories of racial oppression and stereotypes from past centuries still plague the current one. Even some new stereotypes have even been birthed in the 21st century. One of the most popular, the violent history of America’s enslavement of African Americans, is still highly present today. Especially in the past 3 years, headliners for police brutality against the African American community seem to be a norm. In this essay I will be discussing the development of  21st century America’s most popular racial stereotypes. These include the stereotypes of the African American, Mexican Immigrant and Muslim identities. While they may have existed in previous centuries, the 21st century has had events that have either redefined or reinforced these stereotypes.
