Feminist Movement

Feminist movements of the late-nineteenth and twentieth centuries sought to attain social justice for women in society, whether that be by producing equality on numerous levels or ensuring women’s rights in the workplace and society.

First-wave feminism took place in the late-nineteenth and early twentieth century. The main focus of this first wave was women’s suffrage, and the movement culminated in the passage of the nineteenth amendment. Second-wave feminism was a resurgence and continued development of first-wave feminism. Second-wave feminism, however, broadened the scope of what feminism looked like. While first-wave feminism focused on a limited agenda of women’s suffrage, second-wave feminism tackled a wider range of issues such as motherhood, sexuality, marriage equality, workplace equality, stereotypical conceptualizations of women, and domestic abuse amongst other things.
