Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

How to publish your Scalar Book
Scalar uses terms like “sharing” and “availability” to describe the process of publishing your book to different audiences. In order to publish your book to the internet and make it searchable, follow these instructions:
1. Head to My Dashboard and click on the tab, “Sharing.” 2. Under the “Availability” section, change the drop-down bar to “yes” where it asks you if you want to make your URL public. If you want your book to be searchable in the Scalar indexes, also click “yes” in that drop-down box. 3. Scroll down to save!
How to Hide Pages
During the editing process, you may want to publish your book with some content hidden so that you can continue to work on it.
1. In order to hide a page, click the garbage can icon at the top right-hand corner of the page. This will temporarily hide it from the public, but it won’t permanently remove it from your book without taking more steps.
