Thanks for your patience during our recent outage at scalar.usc.edu. While Scalar content is loading normally now, saving is still slow, and Scalar's 'additional metadata' features have been disabled, which may interfere with features like timelines and maps that depend on metadata. This also means that saving a page or media item will remove its additional metadata. If this occurs, you can use the 'All versions' link at the bottom of the page to restore the earlier version. We are continuing to troubleshoot, and will provide further updates as needed. Note that this only affects Scalar projects at scalar.usc.edu, and not those hosted elsewhere.

As a digital publishing platform, Scalar is probably most relevant for academic librarians (especially those in digital publishing or scholarly communications roles) to support students’ and faculty’s work. Scalar also provides a great opportunity for collaborative work for students, professors, and classes thanks to its ability to support multiple authors. Some examples of using Scalar as an alternative to traditional scholarly publishing include:
However, Scalar can be more than just a tool for students and academics. Because it’s able to embed a variety of media, Scalar is also a great resource to curate digital exhibits for library, archives, and museum collections. Museum curators can create digital companions to physical exhibits; archivists can embed audio-visual and other multimedia collections; librarians can create engaging, interactive research guides. Some examples of using Scalar to showcase LAM collections include:
