Summary Analysis
After experimenting many careers, Daniel Awaily, who finally settled as an engineer in an oil industry celebrates his 27th birthday sharing laughter and happiness at KFC. The ad of KFC popped out on his screen, when he was texting his girlfriend on Facebook. The crispy, well-baked chicken wings along with hot French fries were so compelling that it made him eat more. In Ghana, the rapid growth of KFC and other fast food chains has caused a big boom in Obesity. (Searcy 2017)
In their article, “Obesity was rising in Ghana Embraced fast food, then came KFC “New York Times journalist Dionne Searcy and Matt Richtel indicates how the arrival of fast food chains has caused rise in Obesity in Ghana. According to the Institute of Metric and Evaluation, “Ghana Obesity rates have surged to 650 percent, from less than 2 percent to 13.6 percent” (Searcy 2017). In short, Searcy an Richtel argue that the rapid expansion of fast food industry has caused rise in Obesity and had encouraged the growth of life threatening disease.
The author plays with pathos to deliver his message to public. In fact, the whole piece is supported with wide variety of data, charts, statistics for health department. Most of the other sources are paraphrased interviews with professor, medical experts and CEOs of fast food chains. The authors have analyzed the recent death charts, in fact, the piece itself has more than eleven reports showing a direct relationship between high deaths and obesity rates. Ultimately, it indicates that people eat fast food are likely to gain weight, become more obese and are at greater risk of getting ill.
“The Fast food industry has rose 21 percent in USA.” (Searcy 2017). Perhaps, the most effective part of the Searcy work is the connection he builds between the expansion of KFC and health problem resulting from it. This is causing an increase in percentage of people being diagnosed with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and other dangerous diseases. People are at elevated risk of death. “From 1990-2015, death related to high body mass has increased to 179 percent in Ghana.” (Searcy 2017). In a sense, fast food is a symbol of wealth of consumer but ironically, it’s a gateway to death. Further description shows that people are to get murdered by fast food.
Although, Searcy and Richtel used wide variety of sources including charts, data and interviews of experts to support their argument. However, they missed addressing some of the major points. The awareness of obesity was not mentioned in this piece. The deadly effect of obesity in the long run is only known to people who are working in that field whereas as the common man is unaware of it. Also, the consumer choice should be taken into consideration because at the end of day it’s the choice of the buyer whether to have fast food or home cooked meal.
On his 27th birthday Daniel Awaily enjoys his night, having wonderful time with friend and delicious fast food meals at KFC. The New York Times article “Obesity was rising in Ghana Embraced fast food, then came KFC” by Dionne Searcy and Matt Richtel focuses on how fast food has caused rise in Obesity. Still, the author left an important fact that choice of having fast food totally depend on consumer.

Reflection
As a college student, I have been doing many papers and every paper has helped me change in a unique way and showed me more understanding of the material. Same goes of this piece, that I have done. The paper is more shifted toward scientific studies and helped me understand the meaning of how daily routine activities can influence positively or negatively in a long run. The paper is mainly the summary and analysis of how obesity is caused by more intake of fast foods. The format of the summary analyzes itself was new to me because before I thought that a summary is basically a brief outline of the topic. After doing this work, I can understand the difference between a simple summary and summary analysis.
The essay topic worked perfectly towards my objective because it gave me enough knowledge and understanding of material. I could write a well-developed analyzes because of a deep understanding of the material. Its also has polished my writing and analytical skills. Credit also goes to the topic because it had enough information for me to complete my job. The topic suited best for my needs. Since, it is new form of writing, my writing criteria has expanded and now I am able write more precisely and accurately on the what is assigned to me. This writing has showed how to emphasis on key points and showed me how to use pathos effectively to peruse the reader while writing a piece.
