Who/what is Jesse?

This reference to the stump of Jesse gives no background as to who Jesse is, or what a "stump" would mean in this context.  Research revealed that the references to trees or parts of a tree (vines, stumps, etc.) should be understood as a family tree of sorts, from the ancestry of Jesse, which leads to Jesus. (Brewer's)  Therefore, this line is in reference to the birth of Jesus in the future.
