The Guilty Feminist - Male Privilege
As is trademark of The Guilty Feminist, the podcast begins with the hosts using comedy to confess their respective feminist-shortcomings. In this episode, the confessions relate to leg-waxing, accepting a free drink from a presumed chauvinist, disappointment with the “lack” of sex scenes in Fifty Shades of Grey (film), and lying to other mothers about the ease of twin childbirth. Laughs from the live studio audience are audible in the background throughout this segment. Following this, there is music and then a formal introduction to the podcast and the episode hosts. Frances-White explains: “This is the Guilty Feminist, the podcast in which we explore our noble goals as 21st century feminists and the hypocrisies and insecurities which undermine them.”
The hosts speak to the apparent privileges that men have over women, including “the right to age” and the privilege “important men” have when making restaurant reservations. Each respective topic is segued by piano music. Halfway through the episode, Kate O’Donnell, a transgender woman, explains the privileges that she has lost since transitioning from male to female, and the privileges that her partner, a transgender man, has gained since transitioning from female to male. Towards the end of the episode, the hosts make final comments and announcements. The episode finishes with Frances-White attributing final credits for the episode to the sound of audience cheering.
