Frequently, on bringing the eye to the telescope on such nights, a spark would discharge with a slight shock between the eye and the eyepiece. This was extremely annoying, and finally became so disagreeable that it was found convenient frequently to touch the metal of the instrument...the probable explanation of this phenomenon is that it is due to the fur coat and the insulation of the rubber overshoes, the body becoming electrically charged like a Leyden jar." - Barnard in "Photographs of the Milky Way and Comets," 1913media/UA36_Bx12_barnardfur1894025.jpgplain2016-06-05T19:53:12-07:00Christine Turkb279a3dcf419860f915007f04f08e6fc0f8662ce

Burnham's Scrapbook1Astronomer Burnham tries his hand at photography, filling a small scrapbook with images of life on Mount Hamilton. Located on a 19-mile-long road outside of San Jose, the Observatory was quite isolated. In addition to residential facilities, the site of the observatory had its own shops, golf course, post office, and school.media/IMG_6712.JPGplain2016-06-03T16:42:39-07:00Alex Moore6cd84a9f7efd71803c15562e48a509db9e0bb5a6

Warrick states that the Field Quarter was based on a “poetic outlook,” wherein students were encouraged to use thoughts and feelings as well as scientific knowledge, all of which was recorded in daily journals, in order to better understand the natural world. According to Warrick, the class was based on a blend of scientific and poetic approaches to studying nature. This campus publication also includes a poem written by Warrick himself about his experience in the Field Quarter.media/UA66/UA66_Bx70_Poets in the Field.jpgplain2016-06-04T14:11:21-07:00Danielle Crawford22ce6a14f83c9ff73c3545a665951a092258f08e
