Practice-Based Research: Teaching Resource

Step 1: Identify the number of hours/days actually available

  1. Identify your project start date.
  2. Identify your project due date.
  3. List the scheduled holidays between the start date and the due date (bank holidays, vacation, typical family days, etc.).
  4. Estimate unscheduled interruptions (family days, illness, emergencies, mental health days, etc.).
  5. (Optional) If you also have another job that has a set schedule or number of hours, note how many “working days” (7.5 hours) these will fill during the course of the project.
  6. Identify working days available:
    1. Number of weekdays between start date and due date.
    2. Subtract scheduled holidays.
    3. Subtract estimate of unscheduled interruptions.
    4. (Opt) Subtract job-working-days.
    5. The final number gives you your total number of working days available.
Less than you thought, huh?
