Western Influence

Kung Fu Hustling is a very interesting movie that has been heavily influenced by the western culture. We as audience can see many aspects of western influence, a good example would be that many parts of the movie were taking out from the movie called Asterix and Obelix. What surprised me the most was that Asterix and Obelix is a French movie, but Chow took out the idea of fast running character and the idea of people flying out after a punch. Also movies like The Shining and most dominantly The Matrix had very big influence on Chows movie. This west influence draws attention of audience from regional, local and global areas, drawing audience from China, Hong Kong and the west itself. This results with crazy $100 million worldwide at the box office showing how Kung Fu Hustle was able to get attention from local Asian market and western market, which reflects the concept of globalization. Obviously Chow used western influence in Kung Fu Hustle to draw attention of the global audience to Chinese cinematography. This movie was not a traditional martial arts film, to make it more attractive for the western consumers. This movie was so attractive to the western audience that you can watch the movie with English subtitles or completely in English language, just this fact shows that there was a big demand for this movie outside of China. When I was watching this movie, I didn't get any sense that this was a Chinese film, the whole movie felt western. If you would for example take out the Chinese cast and put American or European cast the movie wouldn't be affected by such a radical change. The whole situation with the axe gang, reminds me of old American or Italian movies, probably because it’s more common than in Chinese cinematography. In my view Chow’s life in the US, influenced his perception of how the movie should look, and that was one of the reasons, why he was able to create such a great movie that was watched and enjoyed all over the world.
