A Better Tomorrow

I loved this movie from the beginning, I was emotionally feeling all of the pain that Kit and Ho were going through, which made my connection to this movie even stronger. A better tomorrow, was directed by the Hong Kong action movie director, John Woo, the movie presents a story of a guilty gangster, Seng Tse-Ho, who was just realized from jail, and he is trying to start a new life without mafia. His brother who is working as a police officer doesn’t want to accept any connection with him, because of his criminal past and the fact that their father was killed because of him. A very strong theme that I discovered in this movie was brotherhood, the connection between the two brothers that would constantly reoccur throughout the movie. It is very clear to the audience that the brother who was once a criminal is trying very hard to change and get back with his brother, because his brother is the only family member that is left. Through the theme of brotherhood, we can see the importance of the family in Chinese society, and how all of the family members are interconnected. Family is a key part of Chinese civilization. Unlike in many Chinese movies of that era, this movie didn't really have many elements of martial arts, the characters used guns to solve the issues. The other very big theme was revenge, in my view the entire movie was based on this theme. Since this movie has a lot of violence, no surprise that we get the theme of revenge. The best example of this, would be the last scene of this movie, it was a very long scene, where we can observe that brothers have finally reunited, and are fighting back to back, against the bad guys, who killed their father and betrayed Seng Tse-Ho earlier in the movie. Like in any good movie, good guys win the battle, and everyone was happy after.
