TED Talk

I always knew that China was a very closed country, that tries to block western influence, reminds me a lot of USSR. Watching the TED talk about Chinese internet shocked me, in many ways. I am well aware that China is a communist country, but it does a lot of business worldwide, which requires the full potential of the internet. It was very hard to believe that all of the social networks such as Facebook, instagram and twitter are blocked in China. Even though they have created alternatives to all of this popular websites that we are used to, it is still not the same. It doesn't have as many users worldwide, that share opinions, stories and news on daily bases, all of this chinese alternatives are just locked for only chinese users. Probably the most terrifying fact that was mentioned during the TED, was that every single post that is being posted onto this websites, is being monitored by the government agencies, if you mentioned anything bad about the government you will be in trouble. For me this is crazy, because I lived my entire life in democratic society, where you have the freedom of speech. The so called firewall is the biggest barrier between china and the west, because it blocks the freedom of people and freedom of press, chinese people receive only the news that the government believes are appropriate. A good comparison was made by the speaker of Ted talk, when he compared the great chinese wall to the firewall, and concluding that both of them were working as a mechanism that was blocking outside influence. China has 300 million microbloggers, which is a huge number, and this bloggers are not able to express there real opinion about government, its actions and politics. They are not even able to grow, because they get limited only to this chinese websites, that no one is using outside of china. For me it is very hard to believe that a developed country like china, still has to deal with banned websites and limitations on its citizens.
