La gran Cupola, nella cima della quale evvi la Palla di metallo dentro cui ci capiscono circa venti persone. 4. Monte Vaticano. 5. This was erected in part on the foundations of the Circus of Nero. Key: 1. Place where they fashioned the Mosaics of St. Peter’s 2. Sacristy: near to this, the Obelisk emerged from the earth still standing, which can now be seen in the Piazza of St. Peter’s, and was at the center of the barrier of the aforementioned Circus 3. The great Dome, at the top of which there is a metal Sphere that can fit about twenty people 4. Vatican Hill 5. Ornamenti, Musaici, e finestre, fattivi dai successivi Cesari e ristaurati da’ Sommi Pontefici. 3 Portico con sette archi rifatto nell’anno 1725. dopo la rovina di altro consimile composto di nove, occorsa poco prima del rifacimento. 4 Porta Santa. 5 Parte Settentrionale della Basilica verso Roma, e monti sotto de’quali è uno degl’ingressi delle catacombe degli antichi Cristiani. Lateral rusticated blocks of the Basilica that show the work on the exterior by the aforementioned Emperor 2. Ornaments, Mosaics, and windows made by successive emperors and restored by the Supreme Pontiffs. 3 Portico with seven arches rebuilt in 1725 after the destruction of the other corresponding portico composed of nine arches, which occurred shortly before the restoration. 4 Porta Santa. 5 Northern part of the Basilica toward Rome, and mountains under which there is one of the entrances to the catacombs of the ancient Christians. Eighty columns made of Greek marble, variegated with various colors, transported from the Sepulcher of Emperor Hadrian, sustain the Naves varying in size, and the weight of the lateral naves from those of the central Nave. Another ten columns of Granite are spread throughout the Transept; around which and around the central Nave, are portraits of all the Roman Supreme Pontiffs arranged chronologically with other ancient Paintings that have almost been destroyed by time. The Floor of the Naves is formed from broken pieces of marble, taken from the Ruins of other ancient Buildings. The temple of the Goddess Cybele is round in form, of which one can still see the remains, and it was encircled by a most noble Portico, sustained by numerous fluted Columns and their capitals, each one of which is adorned with pinecones, and one having the attributes of the Deity, to whom the Temple was consecrated. Removed from this portico was a Marble Frieze, and Architrave, and built there was a wall in between a Column, and another which was adapted for the Church dedicated to Saint Mary of the Sun. Key: 1.
