The Digital Piranesi

On the Magnificence and Architecture of the Romans; Observations on the Letter of Monsieur Mariette

This volume contains three separately titled works in which Piranesi advances some of his most controversial opinions through image and text. First, and taking up most of the volume, is Della Magnificenza ed Architettura de’Romani [On the Magnificence and Architecture of the Romans], originally published in 1761. It is followed by Osservazioni sopra la Lettre de Monsieur Mariette [Observations on the Letter of Monsieur Mariette], and Della Introduzione e del Progresso delle Belle Arti in Europa [On the Introduction and Progress of the Fine Arts in Europe], which were originally published in a single volume in 1765. Each work contains typeset text and engraved illustrations; engravings from Della Magnificenza ed Architettura de’Romani are the first to be added and annotated in the pages below.
