Day 5
Narrative Techniques
Dialogue
Watch the video at the top of the page to get some tips on how to write dialogue. Once you are done with that read the dialogue below, from when Harry and his friends go looking for the Sorcerer's Stone."It's OK!" he called up to the light the size of a postage stamp which was the open trapdoor. "It's a soft landing, you can jump!"
Ron followed straight away. He landed sprawled next to Harry.
"What's this stuff?" were his first words.
"Dunno, sort of plant thing. I suppose it's here to break the fall. Come on, Hermione!"
The distant music stopped. There was a loud bark from the dog, but Hermione had already jumped. She landed on Harry's other side.
"We must be miles under the school," she said.
"Lucky this plant thing's here, really," said Ron.
"Lucky!" shrieked Hermione. "Look at you both!" (222).
Remember that you have to indent every time there is a new speaker and that punctuation goes inside of the quotation marks. See above if you need an example. The assignment for to day is to practice dialogue, so use a couple of your characters, that you will be using for your narrative paper, and write 10 lines of dialogue. Use the comment bubble below to submit this.
The Journey
To help you with what kind of journey you want your characters to go through watch these two videos, one is about a hero and the other about the anti-hero. The picture above shows all of the steps of the hero's journey, like the one Luke Skywalker undertakes in the Star Wars movies. This is just to help show you how to keep your story moving along and tell a story that is fun and interesting, sad and moving, or a mixture of both. What kind of journey are your characters going to go on? This journey should help your characters with whatever lesson or obstacle you have them facing. In the comment bubble below write a paragraph about what kind of journey you will have your characters adventure through. This page has paths:
