| Der berühmte Humorist Mark Twain, der sich jetzt nach langem Aufenthalte in Wien auf der Heimreise nach den Ver. Staaten befindet, machte in einer in London gehaltenen Rede gelungen bekannt, daß auch er ein Candidat zum Präsidenten der Ver. Staaten sei und sagt u. A.: | The famous humorist Mark Twain, who is now on his way home to the United States after a long stay in Vienna, announced in a speech held in London that he, too, is a candidate for president of the United States and said, among other things: |
| „Sie können keine Theorien ohne Prinzipien haben und Prinzipien sind nur ein anderer Name für Vorurtheile. Ich habe keine Vorurtheile, weder in Religion, noch in der Politik, noch in Literatur oder in irgend etwas Anderem. Ich bin jetzt auf der Fahrt in meine Heimath, um als Präsidentschaftscandidat aufzutreten, denn sie haben dort noch nicht genug Candidaten und Diejenigen, die sich schon gemeldet haben, sind viel zu sehr behindert durch ihre eigenen Prinzipien, d. h. Vorurtheile. Ich habe vor, einmal die politische Atmosphäre zu reinigen. Ich bin für Alles, was Alle haben wollen. Man muß das ganze Volk zufrieden stellen, nicht blos die Hälfte, denn sonst wäre man ja nur ein halber Präsident. Es giebt keine aus gedehntere Platform als die Meinige. Ich bin für Alles und Jedes, für Mäßigkeit und Unmäßigkeit, für Moralität, für den Gold Standard sowie für Freisilber. Ich habe schon alles mögliche versucht, deshalb möchte ich jetztauch 'mal versuchen, der Herrscher eines Landes zu werden. Ich war Zeitungsredakteur, Schriftsteller, Rechtsanwalt, Einbrecher usw. und habe noch nicht Lust, in meiner Arbeit inne zu halten.“ | “You cannot have theories without principles, and principles are only another name for prejudices. I have no prejudices, neither in religion, nor in politics, nor in literature, nor in anything else. I am now on my way to my home country to appear as a presidential candidate, because they do not have enough candidates there yet and those who have already come forward are far too much hindered by their own principles, i.e. their prejudices. I intend to purify the political atmosphere for once. I am for everything that everyone wants. One must satisfy the whole population, not just half of them, because otherwise one would be only half a president. There is no platform more expansive than mine. I am for everything and anything, for temperance and exess, for morality, for the gold standard and for free silver. I have tried a lot of things, so now I would like to try to become the ruler of a country. I have been a newspaper editor, a writer, a lawyer, a burglar, etc., and I do not yet feel like pausing in my work.” |
