Micro-Landscapes of the Anthropocene

Comment from Steph P

I love the ocean. I'm also terrified of it.
It is so beautiful and powerful!
When asked to write a comment on any chapter in this living book, I immediately chose 'Watery Worlds', and then I chose 'Photo Essays' because the ocean is beautiful to look at.
The first 3 photos on this page are exactly the images I imaged when I saw the chapter title 'Watery Worlds' – cool, blue, and sparkling!
"70% human body, 98% amniotic fluid, 88% breast milk" – what an incredible way to epitomise 'water'.
After the adorable albatross' the images become harder to look at. As much as I might want to avoid these images, ignore them, scroll past at super speed... I know that they are unavoidable.
Ending the essay with the images of animal carcasses prompts a strong emotional reaction, made more poignant still by the memory of the albatross we saw a few photos ago – how the essay ends with "the Albatross speared down from the sky".
