The Met in Motion

Joan Sutherland

Australian soprano Joan "La Stupenda" Sutherland debuted at the Met in 1961 with what was already (following a career-making role debut at Covent Garden in 1959) her signature role: Lucia di Lammermoor. This recording is from 1972, and is conducted by her husband, Richard Bonynge. Sutherland and Bonynge together were key figures in the mid-century revitalization of the bel canto repertoire, and Sutherland was known for showcasing coloratura virtuosity over any dramatic acting chops. Nevertheless, her cadenza hardly strays from the traditional format.
