Makoko 2035: An Encyclopedia

Makoko 2035

It was decided in 2019, after the economic crash and Makoko’s subsequent elevation, to create a new Encyclopedia. The idea came from a workshop started at the Floating School, when it was questioned how the rapidly changing resources and situation of Makoko could be recorded. The first Encyclopedia, really more of a pamphlet, was launched in 2020. Subsequently it was updated, expanded and upgraded to an obscure platform that someone discovered online called Scalar (thought to have been developed at a school once known as the University of Southern California, which failed along with most privatized education in the 2019 crash). Although its generally considered a strange way to trumpet the success of an urban world, the Makoko Encyclopedia is Makoko's exemplar of our radical reinvention, and the depth of our unique education and community.

We publish an update to the encyclopedia every 5 years. The Floating School serves as the central head of the operation, and contributors include board members of the school, teachers, and a small committee of students. Each edition of our Encyclopedia depicts portions of our society we have agreed are significant and valuable to document.
