Assignment: Readings + Visit Alice Campbell Hall (due 9/15)
Part 1: Reading Response:
1. Revisit the Geiger reading from last week, and focus on pages 281-314. CONSIDER this question: Why did the Landgrant model of universities need a "movement" in order to realize? Consider the various actors and key figures mentioned in this section of the text: Daniel Gilman, Ezra Cornell, Andrew White, William Rogers, and Justin Morrill, among others. Focus on one of these key figures, and in a few paragraphs, RESPOND TO the question above, and describe what your specific chosen actor contributed to the Landgrant "movement".
Part 2: Visit Alice Campbell Hall:
2. Visit the New Interactive Exhibit in the Richmond Gallery of Alice Campbell Hall. Spend 10-15 minutes browsing, and take another 30 minutes focusing on your selected booth. Take note of what stands out to you in your own booth. How does it represent the values of "landgrant"? What stories, designs and features draw your attention? And why? Take a note pad and camera (a phone camera is fine), and document at least 2 objects/features of your booth that speak you.
3. In no more than 1 page, describe and summarize what you observed in your booth, the stories that stand out to you, and how/if they represent the values of the University of Illinois and "landgrant". Start by reflecting on your original impression of your booth's features, and what was new to you. Take note of what stories or objects in your booth drew your attention and why. Consider what someone who's never visited the campus or your college before might think if they saw the booth. Feel free to make connections to current events or other resources if relevant.
3a Make sure to upload and add your photos to your page. We'll take some time to each share these in class on Monday 9/16.
Post Parts 1 and 2 of your written assignment to your Scalar site's Week 2 Assignment Page and send us (asaychan@gmail.com and MACS265TeachingTeam@gmail.com) the link by 8P Sunday 9/8.
