Assignment: Reading Response + Radical Illini Visit [due 10/6 @8 PM]
Part 1: Reading Response:
- Read and review the assigned readings on UIUC Student Reform work by Michael Metz. Thinking specifically about the diverse concerns that grew to be included in UIUC Student calls for reform, list at least 5 different strategies that different students, campus groups, or even campus leadership used to communicate those concerns and press for change. List at least 3 barriers -- social, material/technological, and political -- that they worked to overcome. Vern Fein (featured in our readings from Metz) and Paul Schroeder (the 1968 student convocation speaker whose speech we read at the beginning fo the semester) will join us in class Monday. Using a citation from Metz's book, write out two questions for each (or 4 questions in all) that you could imagine asking them, more than 40 years after their work as student reform participants was documented.
- 2a. Take at least an hour to participate in one of the Radical Illini events. Bring a notebook and camera so that you can document the event in context of the readings and class discussions.
- 2b. In no more than 1 page, describe and summarize what you observe during the event. (ie. Who is present? What generations, communities, etc. do they represent? What kinds of questions are asked during the Q+A session). Listen for what you hear to be the primary barriers that needed to be overcome by students - and what strategies and practices student organizers used to address those barriers to change. What collaborations or interdisciplinary partnerships did they develop and require to further aims? How were they represented in the media? Or how did they use media to represent themselves? Include two to three photos to document what you observe. What specific lessons do you hear being shared as especially relevant for students or organizers today, both on and off campus?
- 3a. Make sure to upload and add your reflections to your page. We'll take some time to each share these in class on Monday 10/7.
